As I am starting anew with this website, moving from a static site to a dynamic blog, I have thought of rewriting the “About” page, or at least of adding a section about me specifically, so visitors can get to know me and will relate more to what I have to say.
Months back, I came across this video by Danny Arrington on “My Story Marketing”.
He seems to be into a MLM program, which I am not, but that doesn’t hurt anyone and he does get the Law of Attraction well and is quite an inspiring guy. I enjoyed watching his videos… in fact, there is another one I want to post about soon…
This video is helpful to everyone, because everyone has a story. How you present yourself to the world is how the world will react to you. It is important to know how to tell one’s story, no matter what the goal. Be it about business, about dating, or about making friends.
Generally, I am a good story teller and I had quite an adventurous life. Because I always give it a funny spin, my friends love to hear about my stories.
Usually, they are in bits and pieces, as we sit and talk, because the entire story would be so long and intense, I could make a book out of it.
The story alone of my return from Los Angeles back to Europe with my two cats is an entire chapter… landing in Rome with a broken toe and smelling like a pet zoo, with my friend Tom, who must have prayed all the Saints in heaven to survive that trip…
Hence the challenge to write an about me page that is short and concise and focuses on just a few main aspects of my life that matter most for the purpose of this site.
As Danny says, a good story, is a compelling story. But what makes a story compelling?
Years ago, I did read a book about how to write a screenplay that would entice the audience. No matter whether it is Star Wars, Karate Kid, or Saturday Night Fever, any successful story follows a formula, so that people can identify with it, and “feel” for the lead character.
It is called “the journey of the Hero”.
The Hero starts at an average point, or a point of darkness and confusion and, as the story evolves (with the help of archetype characters/supporting actors), undergoes a journey of complete transformation at the soul level.
In the end, the Hero becomes a new man/woman. He has reached a new level of understanding about life and himself.
This is what we all aim to and that’s why we relate to it. This is what makes a story compelling.
If the story was something like “I was born filthy rich, never had a problem, and here I am, the same as before”, nobody would have the slightest interest it.
We like to hear about people who made it from nothing, who went through difficulties and kept the dream alive. People who were able to transform negativity into a challenge and an opportunity. We feel for them, because this is what we go through as well. We want to hear more, because we can learn from them.
When we remember people, it’s because we remember their story.
You are the Hero of your own life. You have a compelling story to tell, no matter where you come from and who you are. Your story is extremely valuable, it is unique, and can help inspire many others.
When you have defined your own story, your perception about yourself will be more focused, you will present yourself to the Universe and the world out there in the most unique way that has your signature all over it.
It is you, just you, nothing but you…
