How to use the Bagua
A quick guide to bringing harmony into your home with Feng Shui
by Palma Bellardoni
The Bagua can be used as the spiritual and energetic blueprint of your home, or of any area that you want to map, for example a plot of land, any individual room, your camping trailer, your office desk, or your business card.
As mentioned earlier in the introduction, a Feng Shui school popular in the West, known as the Black Hat Sect of Tantric Buddhism, avoids complex calculations by establishing a “virtual north”, so you don’t actually need a compass to apply these valuable principles.
The main entrance door is considered the “Mouth” of Chi, where the energy starts flowing in from and fills the space, thus becoming the main point of reference for your grid.
Now, with your feet standing at the doorstep, face the interior of the house and line up the bottom north section of the Bagua with the section of your home where you find the entrance door.
You can do this either mentally or you can superimpose the bagua over a drawing or map of your home.
It is important that you use the main entrance door, that means, the door intended as principal entry by the architect, regardless of the frequency of use.
While it is common today to use more often the side door, or the kitchen door, the intended main door is still the one to be considered to establish the eight spiritual directions.
Similarly, you can overlay the bagua on any individual room - using the door to that room as your point of reference, when facing the room. Or the main door of a camping trailer. For an office desk, the entrance is where you are sitting facing the desk. For a business card, it is the bottom center, where you would hold the card, and so on.

Remember that the entrance door is always set at the “virtual north”. When you are holding the grid in your hand, the north is facing you.
