How spiritual is the Law of Attraction?

When one thinks of the Law of Attraction, the first thing that comes to the mind of many people is the potential for luxury, wealth, success, and manifesting homes, cars, and huge amounts of money. We have come to associate attraction with possessions, while the deep spiritual aspects of it have been often overlooked.

I have previously talked about the Law of Attraction, from the point of view of potential enlightenment, and our approach to reality, today I would like to focus more on the spiritual perspective.

Law of Attraction, the mainstream way. – Having.

In a society where diamonds are still a girl’s best friend, the focus of the Law of Attraction has been mostly on the end results it can give, when correctly applied. The spin is around the having part of it. This trend has reached the masses when the movie The Secret became a success. Focusing primarily on gaining material wealth, it did not explain well enough the spiritual principle behind it. To its credit, The Secret is a launching pad into the process, and it got the word out there. The movie was aimed primarily at the masses who knew nothing, or very little, about spirituality, and it has the merit of introducing the concept in a way that most people could relate to. Especially after the first edition was no longer available, and the movie has been edited from the most important material. But I will leave this for another post.

A new wave of wealth oriented teachings and programs has emerged from this, like the Millionaire Mind, and a lot of other mentors focusing only on creating wealth and financial success.

Law of Attraction, the spiritual way. – Being.

Spiritual seekers have been wondering about this approach and have tried to explain how and why the Law of Attraction is a spiritual law. I agree with what Ray Baskerville of LifeDivine has to say on the subject.

… if only used to gratify our egoic desires it will not evolve us very much further. Indeed it is possible it will entrench us deeper in maya …

Ray explains that the application of LOA is spiritual or not depending on the intent of its use. When we talk of LOA, we often talk about the actual application, not of the underlying principles. I think it’s important to be aware of this, to avoid misconceptions on the Law of Attraction.

One important thing to know, is that the Law of Attraction is a universal law. It works at all times, whether you are aware of it or not, whether you like it or not. This is an energy based world, thoughts are electricity, a vibrational frequency, reflected in our emotional state. To make LOA work for you, going in the direction of your dreams, you consciously align yourself vibrationally. Lisa of Lotus Essence explains, in an easy to understand way, how to get started in doing this.

I am deeply intrigued at how Reginaldc of U Create All explains LOA as being a combination of two universal laws or principles, condensed into one for simplicity.

The second component is the most talked about component of the law of attraction…

It is a quite enlightening and clarifying read, where he explains which are the two universal components/laws and how they operate.

Having vs. Being

From a spiritual perspective, the force behind creation flows through you, according to your state of Being. When you manifest a creation consciously, it is a spiritual endeavor, in that you have understood how energy works. You have aligned yourself with the universal forces and brought forth the miracle of alchemical transformation of energy into matter.

When your primary focus is on the process of alignment, in understanding how cause and effect work, you are looking at the principle, well aware that the manifestation is a mere result of the practical application of the law. The focus here is in the being part of it, not in the having part of it.

When the intent is to simply use the principles (because they always work automatically and neutrally, with no judgment of right and wrong, good or bad), with the illusion of gaining happiness from the end result, we are in a bind. There will not be happiness in the having of it, but there will be joy in experiencing the expansion of our Being. In other words, having a new car does not lead to evolution of consciousness, and any attachment to it is in the ignorance of the impermanent nature of things. But creating a new car into our experience can lead to evolution of consciousness when we look at the forces that caused this to happen.

When we acknowledge the infinite abundance of this Universe, and know that this abundance is made of waves, energy, vibrations, that will condense into our physical reality, then our reality is viewed under a spiritual perspective. We are able to read through the lines of creation, we realize what a wonderful process has brought things into existence.

The true spiritual meaning of the Law of Attraction

Luxury cars and boats aside, from the perspective of Being, the understanding of the Law of Attraction, helps us realize that, ultimately, we are responsible for what happens to us, that we are the creators of our reality. We acknowledge that no other being is to be blamed for how we feel. When we realize that our happiness does not depend on external circumstances, or on what people around us do, we don’t hold anyone hostage for the sake of our own well being.

If everyone realized how ultimately free we are, at the same time being aware of the abundant resources that we all have access to, it would be a world of peace and harmony. When we allow the Source of all creation to flow into our lives, we allow the Universe to keep expanding, and our consciousness to evolve with it. When we realize that we are an ever expanding part of Source Consciousness, we feel again connected to it. We start seeing ourselves as vibrational beings, allowing the spiritual part of us to shine through.

It’s through our being and our wanting that the Universe expands, not through our having.

What about you? What is your approach to the Law of Attraction? How did you learn about it?

You have covered here the most important tenet to understanding the Law of attraction. And that first and foremost, it is spiritual in nature. Being ale to attract “things” is one of the perks, but certainly not the foundation. The Law is more about realizing what are true potential is and connecting with our inner source. It is an awakening to to who we really are. We can create wonderful relationships, peace, happiness, and prosperity. I really enjoyed this post. :)

I’ve been reading about this law of attraction more and more recently. It seems to be rising in popularity.

I’ll be interested in seeing how it can be used to grow as a spiritual creature or to create anything.

    • Palma says:

Hi Jacob, seeing how this universal law works and how it can be used is great, because that way you will be creating consciously and deliberately, rather than unconsciously (the law operates at all times, every day of your life).

To get really started with a good understanding, I’d recommend as the best source for the teachings Abraham-Hicks.

Scroll down to the free “For your personal enlightenment” section. You will find a great intro recording, video clips, a journal with the teachings, and more. :-)

Hi palma, great article! I think that we really complicate what is spiritual. I have come to believe that everything that we experience is spiritual. There is never a time that we are not connected to source energy. With that being said, understanding the universal laws is important because not only does learning to apply them in the physical world matter but we also retain that knowledge when we go back into the spiritual world. I believe that the universal laws have been taught to us so that we may operate in whatever plane we exist at anytime. Unfortunately in the physical world we have amnesia. However, any experience we have is retained in our memory, which is part of our eternal being or soul. Therefore it is metaphysical, or beyond the physical and that makes our experiences all spiritual.

reginaldc’s last blog post..If the Law of Attraction is so great, why do I keep getting bad relationships?

    • Palma says:

Hi reginaldc, I agree with you. Everything is intrinsically spiritual. To perceive it as such, the soul has to be aware of it. That way, as you say, we retain that knowledge in other planes of existence.

That’s where intent and mindfulness come into play, highlighting the already existing spiritual aspect of anything, so that we can see that.

Objectively, all our experiences are spiritual. Subjectively, they become so for us, when we acknowledge that mindfully. Then, the soul learns and gains from the experience.

Thank you so much for your insights!

The Law of Attraction works, but it’s not the only Law in effect, and it relies on context. It’s easier to attract rain on a day when there’s a chance of rain, and impossible to attract rain if there’s no moisture in the air. It’s not a law of creation, only manipulation; if there’s little or nothing for it to work with, it’s not much help. So the better the background context, the more effective it is.

    • Palma says:

Hi Elizabeth, yours is an interesting approach that will give me some thinking to do. I hear you about trying to manifest rain on a sunny day! :-) Instant, or near instant manifestation would take such a huge quantum leap, that it is very hard to achieve it. When working through the buffer of time, we have a better chance to be in alignment with our vision. In the case of rain, there would be time to find oneself at the right place, at the right time, where it is raining. This way, we attract the experience or rain into our reality, in alignment with our vision. It’s about attracting, rather than creating, though the terms are used interchangeably. Thank you for your insights, I’ll keep thinking! :-)

    Palma,
Great post and a nice blog as well. (I came over from 31DBB.) My experience with LOA has been one of wonder over the years. I find, however, the more I try to explain it, the more muddled further removed I become from experiencing it. For me, it’s kind of like trying to intellectualize Buddhist koans….sometimes, it’s better just to sit. ;-)

    • Palma says:

Baz, yes I have seen you on the 31DBB forum! You came right to the heart of the matter, because LOA is all about experiencing it. After all, the explanation comes really down to a few words… this is a vibrational Universe. :-)

I hear you about the Buddhist koans, they are better left to our Higher Self, which is the only one who can understand the sound of one clapping hand. Zen stories are better suited to expand upon, in fact there is one I meant to post about… :-)

Thank you for visiting, and for your feedback!

The key to using the law of attraction to everyone’s benefit is to keep the ego out of it. This is an incredibly difficult thing to do since it requires getting the ego out of the way first. However, with introspection through meditation, growth in compassion for one another, and allowing spirituality to play a large role in our lives it can be done.

    • Palma says:

Hi Sonia – I agree, keeping the ego out of it is key. It is the ego that develops attachment to the manifestation, and gets inflated when we become able to manifest consciously. Compassion and introspection are fundamental in developing awareness of the spiritual way to move energy.
