Blog evolution with Sweetcron

When it comes to learning new stuff about WordPress, blogging and social networking, I always enjoy reading (Anti) Social Development, by Kim Woodbridge. It’s a great blog, full of helpful resources, great links, new ideas to try, and very cool tips you can apply to your own blog.
This past weekend, I meant to go through all the Twitter related tips, in her (Anti) Social Lists, since I am now ... Continue reading...

Rethinking the 404 page in WordPress

My dive into the world of error pages started when I signed up for Google Webmaster Tools. Upon running the web crawl diagnostics, I found out I had nearly 12,000 “not found” pages. Twelve thousand missing pages can’t be good for page ranking!
As it turned out, the problem was due to an old Amazon script, that I had deleted from the server a while ago, but that had allowed ... Continue reading...

Creating pages with a separate loop in WordPress

When I decided to post about WordPress and blogging in general, I wanted to keep it separate from the main loop, and create a specific section for it, while still being a part of the same blog. This seems to be something that a lot of WordPress users have a need for, considering the frequency of the question in the support forum.
If you notice, all the posts in the Zen ... Continue reading...

WordPress themes with a hidden price

One of yesterday’s WP forum threads had to do with themes containing obfuscated code. Most people downloading these “free” themes don’t know much about coding, and they are completely unaware of the content of their template files.
These themes may seem free, but there is a price to pay over time. The hidden code will work day and night, rendering questionable links who will take away from the blogger’s page rank, ... Continue reading...

Poken update

Earlier this month I posted about winning a poken from Streamlined Mind. It arrived packaged really nicely, kudos to Hugo from Streamlined Mind for a great presentation. Here it is!
After fiddling with it for several hours, because I forgot to take out a protective plastic strip before inserting it into the USB port (blush), I managed to activate it, and registered my account on Do You Poken.com, where I can ... Continue reading...

Finally closer to the look I wanted

I have spent quite some time upgrading the theme, and changing the sidebars. I am happier now, with the way the site looks. It’s closer to what I originally wanted. Also, I finally recreated the space for Adsense.
The very first concept for this site was to have it all in black, because visually it’s way more appealing to me. Black creates a great contrast with the graphics, it’s way cooler. ... Continue reading...

The hacking game

Today, a kind WordPress forum user emailed me, warning me that while he was visiting my site, some broken links were found. I checked immediately and great… the postcards page had been hacked.
Luckily, it was just a hack in the config file, changing the database settings. Probably just a kid having nothing better to do. Now everything is back to normal, but this took time away from my regular posting. ... Continue reading...

I won a Poken!

Lately, I have been visiting Streamlined Mind, a blog I found through Entrecard, and that I quite enjoy reading. Last month, I was intrigued by the article about Pokens.
A Poken, is a small gadget that contains links to your social network profiles, and can exchange your info with another Poken. It’s really cute.
A bit later, it turns out that Streamlined Mind had a giveaway contest, with extra Pokens given as ... Continue reading...

Losing my mind with Feedburner

While I was helping other people on the WordPress forum, I came across an interesting question. “How do I know how many people are reading my feed?”. Right…. the feed…
With so much else on my mind joining services, adding new content, and leaving comments, I did not think of that side of the issue. With all the feed readers and news aggregators, a lot of people simply subscribe via ... Continue reading...

Blog networking with Entrecard

A good way to get your own blog known in the blogosphere, is to start networking with other bloggers. Especially the ones within your niche.
I have recently joined Entrecard, a free blogging network, and I love it. Signing up takes just a few minutes. Once you have your account, you place a small card widget on you blog, where other bloggers can drop their card when they visit you, or ... Continue reading...

Using your own blog URL as your openID

One way to network with other bloggers and promote your own blog, is to leave comments on other blogs within your niche. It is important to write comments that add to the conversation, and that are somewhat meaningful. This way, other readers may want to see what your blog is about, and click on the link back to your site.
Since I started exploring other blogs and leave comments to create ... Continue reading...
