A spiritual approach to global warming

Addressing the issue of global warming, was inspired by Gaiatribe, a great blog for a sustainable planet, that was previously reviewed here. It has a lot of good resources and ideas, for those interested in sustainable resources and living in harmony with our Planet. Please, check it out!

Is mankind contributing to global warming?

There is no doubt that the issue of global warming is an important one. And a controversial one. One side warns us against the imminent dangers of fossil fuel emissions created by man, and the resulting collapse of the Planet. This warning has put many people in a state of panic about our future as a whole. Another side says that anthropogenic (man made) global warming is a dangerous hype, when there is a detailed scientific explanation of the facts proving the contrary, and that the hoax is being used for a political agenda, that will put billions of dollars in the pockets of just a few powerful ones.

Even worse, this agenda may lead to decisions taken by a few, that will affect everyone on the Planet dramatically. Like the disastrous possibility of climate engineering, that may cause another ice age. This folly could create more damage than what it claims to prevent. If there is anything I’d worry about, it would be this.

Those that are warning against the global warming theory, claim that man made CO2 emissions amount to less than 3%, while the remaining 97% is due to naturally occurring water vapor emissions, due to sun cycles. A phenomenon that has always existed, and there is nothing we can do about it. Man is not the leading cause of this cyclic natural occurrence. Apparently, we are toward the end of this naturally occurring warming cycle, and we are entering another cooling cycle, which is more troubling to agriculture and food supply.

What to do, then?

Even if we are not contributing dramatically to global warming, it is true that we are polluting water resources and poisoning the environment in many ways. It is true that never like before, we have been out of touch with a spiritual connection to Mother Earth, and have not respected the delicate balance that is necessary for a sustainable planet. Only considering the idea of climate engineering is a living proof of how disconnected we are.

Even though global warming is a natural occurrence, this is no excuse to waste resources and not look for natural energy sources that will work in harmony with the ecosystem. We may not have an impact on the temperature, but we can have an impact on quality. I remember seeing a video of a polar bear unable to swim far after months of fasting, unable to hunt, and lie down on a piece of ice to let himself die. That picture touched my heart forever. If this is part of a natural cycle, it is easier to accept, but from the premise that we are doing whatever possible to not disrupt the natural balance. We have endangered several species, we are devastating the rain forest, we are intoxicating the oceans with sonar waves. We may not be the cause of global warming, but we can do better than this. And we can do it from the level of thought consciousness.

Awakening global consciousness to environmental issues

Those who understand how reality is created, realize that global consciousness has a very important part on realities that take place on a planetary scale. When enough people are in a panic, focusing their thoughts on the doom of global warming, thought consciousness will set similar forces in motion. From a spiritual perspective, it is good to move consciousness from a place of fear based focus (which will feed that fear and that reality), to a place of active de-focusing and re-focusing on the desired reality.

This is not about denial of the problem, it is about not wanting to fuel that kind of consciousness and follow a different stream actively. When one has awakened to a spiritual view of this Universe, one cannot but feel the Oneness of all things. A spiritual seeker will naturally eat sustainable foods, will recycle, pollute less and leave a smaller imprint behind. The footsteps of a spiritually awake person, will rarely lead to a fast food junction, the primary cause of deforestation in the Amazon. This person will live a life more in balance with nature and will know that every decision will have an impact on future generations.

The important factor is that this is not done from a place of fear and a sense of impending doom, but from a place of joy, feeling the inter-connection of all Creation. It is the result of focusing on a view of our future and our Planet that is nourishing and positive.

Environmental activism and consciousness

In an ideal world, when enough people are following the stream of consciousness that will look at the future of our Planet from a place of harmony and connection, pollution, warming, panic and fear will no longer exist. There will be a natural and joyous shift to a sustainable way of living. Spiritual awakening, however, runs on its own time frame. It has to occur gradually and naturally, and not everyone is at the same level of awareness.

Environmental activists are reaching out to the general population, speaking a more direct and practical language, not necessarily tied to a spiritual view of life. There is much good that they have done and that they are doing. Without their strong voice, many would be unaware of many issues concerning animal species and the environment in general. They act without the luxury of the buffer of time, because some issues need urgent addressing.

Activists and spiritual seekers alike, share a vision of a better planet, but operate from two different perspectives of consciousness. In order to maintain the balance, when urgent action activates a sense of fear and doom, the spiritual seeker will re-focus actively on the final vision, to neutralize global fear and feed planetary consciousness with the positive vision. Step by step, our Planet will move forward and shift to a higher level, where mankind will be in accordance with nature, while evolving at the same time.

When planetary consciousness will have moved to another level of thinking and seeing our future, when all mankind will awaken to the connection of All That Is, we will have created a sustainable and harmonious reality, on this Planet and beyond.

What is your view on this issue? Do you believe that is possible to shift consciousness to an actively positive view of our future?

Palma

We had better HOPE that global warming is our fault, because that would mean we could do something about it. If it’s based on some huge natural phenomenon that is out of our reach, then we are just screwed.

It does make sense Palma! Fear triggers a vicious circle, this has been proved by simple human experience at more levels. I was just recently discussing with a friend -who claims not believing in “humanism” but only in biology – her theory that humanity is approaching its end “naturally”- since “everything is natural” as all phenomena are actually native to this earth, that is to say, if this earth produced man ultimately it also produced whatever we call “artificial” or man’s creation. Accordingly, all efforts to “save” planet earth including ecology or, say, alternative or low impact energy actions, everything that has come up lately, are useless because ultimately they are just a panic reaction to global warming or environmental alerts, nothing but “fads” made up to cope with the fear of death we are naturally pervaded with, which is what triggered evolution in the first place: the drive to survive/avoid death at all cost. In short, all these efforts would be just a desperate and vain attempt to avoid a confrontation with the horror of decay and passing away, our ultimate taboo. We arrogant human race believing that the fate of the planet is really in our hands. She made a good philosophical point there, I admit, and instilled some doubt in my tireless positivism. Perhaps thinking that if we have caused this…we can also undo it, if we really try hard, might mellow down the angst of an inevitable end, even admitting that it is not completely in our hands, we just hate to face we are indeed “screwed”. Then, is it? Do we need to believe that we are in control to have any hope? is it ok to have any hope? is it really just an emotional response to some kind of ancestral fear of being wiped out as a species? Is this the natural course of evolution and we just don’t want to know about it because it’s too freaking unbearable? and mostly, is therefore any attempt to make it better, vain and ridiculously doomed to fail? I just couldn’t agree on the uselessness of believing in, say, lower impact energy solutions or a more ecological and ethical behaviour, etc., it just feels so right, but I had to admit “we don’t know shit” and yes, it actually looks like it may all end up as in the animation movie “Wall-e” and without the comforting happy ending. But, thank you Palma for refreshing me on this crucial point. It is a matter of perspective. It is not just about global consciousness but about spiritual awareness. The “ubermench” -Nietzche’s idea of the evolved human -or overman – the spiritual man, will take that step as “naturally” as can be. For this high evolved man sustainable choices are authentically natural, not as a result of the fear of “the end” (have you noticed that they don’t even write it in the closing of movies anymore?) or a more perverse but in a way also “natural” will to power. Probably my feeling of righteousness about the importance of sustaining mother earth, and supporting every action big or small towards this goal is not totally free of a certain, occult fear of death. Fear of pain, fear of loss. But I believe we can chose to try again and again to come back to that spiritual perspective. If only for the sake of “cleaning” our thoughts from those powerful fears and see what happens. I don’t like the idea of humanity being wiped out of the planet for whatever reason, what a shame would it be! so I prefer to go with Nietzche and believe that “…the overman is the meaning of the earth. Let your will say: the overman shall be the meaning of the earth…Man is a rope, tied between beast and overman…a rope over an abyss…what is great in man is that he is a bridge and not an end…” I chose to go with this, to put my will on that kind of thought until it comes naturally from a spiritual place. Of course I thank my friend for bringing me back to this questionings, true is that collective forces strongly pull down to easy unconsciousness as or excruciating fear. And that the idea of death is not commonly addressed in a way that we can accept it as a part of life. But if we as human species have been equipped by nature with fear -among other powerful emotions- for the sake of survival, and intelligence to challenge that same fear –with all sorts of amazing inventions- and improve this life, we are also graced by a soul or spiritual centre that holds a wider meaning of nature, ultimately “our” true nature. It only needs to be revealed, and I chose to think that-in due time- it will. When a sufficient amount of people will act from this fearless core, this higher consciousness place, changes will come in facts naturally as water –ok tap or bottled water, as an image, for my friend.
Isn’t there a story where the Buddha renounces to enter nirvana until all sentient beings can enter Nirvana? Thanks for your wonderful post!

Silvia, your tireless positivism is your biggest treasure. Keep it bright and shiny! Everything in this Universe is expanding and evolving, and mankind follows this evolution. Life is an unstoppable force, because it’s where consciousness can focus.

When we, as One Mind, will channel this consciousness into a positive and nourishing stream, reality will follow. Because reality is nothing but condensed energy. The mind of each and everyone of us is so powerful, broadcasting signals out to the One Mind, and capable of influencing it. As individuals, we can do so much to contribute to a positive vision of our future. Each and every person can help reach critical mass, where a global shift into higher consciousness will occur. This is bound to happen, because it is part of our evolution.

If it wasn’t for the media feeding impending doom, mankind would not be in a panic. It’s nothing but a state of mind. When you look at the moon, gaze at the stars on the beach, watch birds fly in a flock, you know in your Soul that there is harmony in this divine creation. Individually, as we move through time, we are bound to shift into another dimension and back. But as consciousness, we are always part of the stream. As mankind, we are bound to evolve into wonderful beings.

The premise of this Universe is unconditional love, not doom. When we follow that stream, we thrive on all levels. Being spiritually aware means tapping into the stream, “knowing” this Love in every fiber of our being. Once awake, we are the ubermensch. Right here, right now.

Thank you for your insightful comment!

    Hey Palma,
excellent post. I agree with you that what we focus on consciously will be the world that we make. The media feeds fear around the world. I saw a dvd the other day called the esoteric agenda that laid out an entire plan of the elites around the world and how they are using the global warming scare to further their gains. It is so easy to roll our eyes on the conspiracy theories but we have to wonder why we are given so much information that makes people fearful and paranoid. The universe is a mirror that reflects back to us our feelings and visualizations. You are on target. we should visualize the world we want to make. not cower in fear about the doom and gloom prognosticators.

Hi Reginald, you nailed it! The Elite knows very well how global consciousness works, but the spiritually awake will not play this game. It is interesting to note that the true opposite of love is not hate, but fear. When we are connected with the universal stream, and All That Is, fear can no longer exist. And by consciously focusing on the world we want to create, we are tapping into that infinite stream. :-)

A while a go I had the intuition that at the end of ANY path – whether that be a computer programmer, a mathematician, a hairdresser, or a grocery store clerk – leads to complete mastery and the realization of reality. Mastery is when the person has followed such a road that (to use a phrase from the Rahras of Sikh texts) ‘becomes more and more narrow.’ What a person realizes is that as he follows the path and it becomes narrower, he receives fame for his mastery and followers. The more and more mastery he gains, the more followers (again, going back to the pyramid). At some point, this person becomes the oracle or the definitive source in his field and has true and full mastery. This is when the person truly realizes that he can say anything and it becomes reality. What’s more remarkable is that all these different paths actually lead to one – and when true mastery is gained in one, the common can be seen in the lot, and mastery is gained quickly in all.

Think about Einstein. He did work furthering a field in his chosen path – physics. He discovered some patterns and did some remarkable work. At one point, anything he said would be deemed true by reason that HE SAID IT. No one need question his proofs. (For an example of this, read Margaret Atwood’s book ‘Payback’ and pay particular attention to her grammar – technically speaking, she could write completely incorrect grammar, but no editor would ever dare to correct such master in writing – EVER – and this grammar is then used to justify further grammar, therefore making her the creator of reality). I believe that he was a genius that could have done anything (but chose not to) simply because he had so many followers. If he wanted to, he could have said f=nd3 as a formulation for fusion (incrementing each letter by one or the like) and it would become reality.

This goes back to the egg and chicken and which came first. (I know the answer’s the egg ala Adam and Eve). The proof of a theory cannot exist without a theory – and if everyone already believes this theory to be true (since it’s said by a master), then ultimately it WILL be true. And if the master says a bunch of nonsense to see if the world is truly an illusion, when it becomes reality he will know and will say something like this:

“Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.” – Einstein

    And more importantly, something like:

“Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius — and a lot of courage — to move in the opposite direction.” – Einstein

We say the earth is round, but if an oracle says it’s not round but sinusoidal – BUT, you have to go 1,000,000 light-years away to see it, and to go that far away you can exploit a given formula or anomaly in the space-time continuum, when we do it, I’ll wager it will indeed be true.

Hi Moh Singh – Sorry for the delay in replying. You raise another very interesting issue! I fundamentally agree with you, but I would like to elaborate more on these concepts. Moving this topic to the forums, as soon as I am able to (having issues after the upgrade).

Update: new topic created The path to mastery
